This policy explains what happens to your information when you visit House Tweaks. It describes how this site actually works today, rather than listing every practice a website might theoretically have.
The short version
You can read every article on House Tweaks without telling us anything about yourself. We only receive personal information when you choose to send it — by using our contact form, leaving a comment, or entering your email into our subscription form.
We do not sell your information to anyone, and we do not share it for advertising.
What we do not do
We think this is worth stating plainly, because it is unusual enough to be worth knowing:
- We do not run analytics. As of the date at the bottom of this page, House Tweaks does not use Google Analytics or any other third-party analytics service. We are not tracking your visit.
- We do not run advertising. There are no ad networks, no ad tracking, and no advertising cookies on this site.
- We do not run tracking pixels. No Facebook pixel, no advertising tags.
- We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.
- We do not build profiles of you or use your information to target you.
If any of this changes — for example if we add analytics as the site grows — we will update this page to say so.
What we collect, and when
When you use our contact form
Our Contact page has a form asking for your name, your email address and your message. When you submit it, that information is sent to us so we can read and reply to what you wrote.
We use it to respond to you and for nothing else. We do not add you to a mailing list because you contacted us.
When you leave a comment
Comments are open on our articles. When you leave one, we collect what you type into the comment form — your name, your email address, your website if you choose to give one, and the comment itself.
Like most WordPress sites, we also record your IP address and your browser’s user agent string. This helps identify spam.
Your name, your comment and its date are shown publicly on the article. Your email address and IP address are not published. Please do not put anything private in a comment — a comment is a public statement, and the rest of the internet can read it.
If you have an avatar set up with the Gravatar service, an anonymized string (a hash) created from your email address may be sent to Gravatar so your picture can be displayed alongside your comment. Gravatar’s own privacy policy governs that. If you do not use Gravatar, no picture is shown.
When you subscribe to updates
Our site includes an email subscription form. It does not currently have a mailing list service connected to it. If we connect one, we will update this page to name the service that receives subscriber emails and to explain how to unsubscribe.
If you give us your email address, we will use it to send you updates from House Tweaks and for nothing else. We will not sell it or pass it to advertisers, and you will be able to unsubscribe at any time.
When you simply read the site
Like essentially every website, our web hosting provider automatically keeps server logs of requests made to the site. These typically include IP addresses, the pages requested, timestamps and browser information. They are generated by the server itself as part of running and securing the site — not by us watching you — and we use them only for security and troubleshooting.
Cookies
A cookie is a small file a website can store in your browser.
- If you leave a comment, you may be given the option to save your name, email address and website in cookies so you do not have to type them again next time. That is your choice, and declining it does not stop you commenting. These cookies last about a year.
- If you log in to the site — which applies to us as its administrators, not to ordinary readers — WordPress sets cookies to manage that session.
- Our caching system may set a technical cookie to serve you the correct version of a page quickly.
We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
You can delete or block cookies through your browser settings at any time. Blocking them will not stop you reading House Tweaks.
Embedded content and links to other sites
Articles on this site may include embedded content — for example a video — and links to other websites.
Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited that other website directly. Those sites can collect data about you, use cookies, and track your interaction with the embedded content, all under their own policies rather than ours.
Where we link to a retailer such as Amazon, that retailer may set a cookie to record that you arrived from our site. Our Affiliate Disclosure explains this in full.
We do not control any of these third parties and are not responsible for their practices. It is worth reading the privacy policy of any site you visit.
Who can see your information
Your information is accessible to the person who runs House Tweaks, and it is stored on the servers of our web hosting provider. That is the extent of it.
We do not have a marketing department, a sales team, or a data-sharing arrangement with anyone. We may disclose information if we are legally required to, and for no other reason.
How long we keep things
- Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely so that follow-up replies still make sense in context.
- Contact form messages are kept for as long as they are useful for handling your inquiry.
- Subscriber emails, if you have subscribed, are kept until you unsubscribe.
Your choices
You are entitled to ask us about the information we hold on you. Specifically, you can ask us to:
- Tell you what we hold about you.
- Correct it if it is wrong.
- Delete it. If you have left a comment, you can ask us to remove it, along with the data attached to it. If you have subscribed, you can unsubscribe or ask us to delete your email address.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional legal rights over your personal data. We will honor any valid request regardless of where you are — we would rather just do the right thing than check whether we are obliged to.
To make a request, use our Contact page. We may need to confirm your identity before acting, so that someone cannot delete or obtain your data by pretending to be you. There is a limit on what we can do here: we cannot remove data held by a third party, such as a comment you left that has already been copied elsewhere.
Children
House Tweaks is written for adults making decisions about their homes. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us and we will remove it.
Security
No website can promise perfect security, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. If a breach ever affected your information, we would tell you.
Changes to this policy
If we change how this site handles your information, we will update this page and change the date below. Where a change is significant, we will say so rather than quietly editing the text.
