House Tweaks was built for a simple reason: finding trustworthy home improvement information online is harder than it should be. Too many articles are written to fill a page rather than to answer a question.

This page sets out the standards every article on House Tweaks is meant to meet. It is here so you know what to expect from us — and so you have something concrete to hold us to when we fall short.

What we cover

House Tweaks is for homeowners, renters, DIY enthusiasts, home cooks, gardeners and anyone trying to make their living space work better. This site covers:

Our goal is not to publish the largest number of articles. It is to publish ones you can return to when you actually need them.

How we research

Before we publish a guide, comparison or recommendation, we work through the same basic process:

How we make recommendations

Every recommendation has a reason attached. We do not publish bare lists of products. If we suggest something, we explain who it suits, what it does well, and where it falls short.

We name the limitations. If a product has drawbacks, you deserve to know them. A review that only lists strengths is an advertisement, not a review.

There is no single “best” for everyone. The right choice depends on your home, your needs and your budget. Our job is to explain the reasoning clearly enough that you can make the call yourself, not to make it for you.

We separate facts from opinions. We aim to make it clear which parts of an article are verifiable fact, which are our judgment, and which are recommendations — so you can weigh them differently.

Being honest about hands-on experience

This matters enough to state plainly, because a lot of sites are vague about it.

House Tweaks does not claim firsthand experience with every product featured on this site. Where a recommendation is based on research, product analysis and reputable sources rather than personal use, that is what it is — careful research, not a hands-on test. Where an article does draw on practical experience, we say so.

We would rather tell you exactly what a recommendation is built on than let you assume more than we can back up.

Reviewing and updating

Home improvement information goes stale. Products get discontinued, replaced, or quietly changed. Prices move. Better options appear.

We will review and update our content to keep it accurate and relevant, and we would rather correct an article than leave it sitting there being wrong.

When we send you elsewhere

Some home improvement work is not a DIY job, and no article — ours included — is a substitute for a qualified professional looking at your actual home.

When a topic involves electrical work, gas, plumbing, structural changes, or anything else where getting it wrong carries real risk, we will say so and point you toward a licensed professional. Please read our Disclaimer for the full picture.

Independence

House Tweaks participates in affiliate programs, which means we may earn a commission on some purchases. Those partnerships do not decide what we recommend or what we say about it.

If a product we could earn a commission on is the wrong choice, it is the wrong choice, and we will say so. Our full Affiliate Disclosure explains exactly how this works and how we mark it.

Corrections

We get things wrong sometimes. When we do, we want to fix it.

If you spot an error, an out-of-date detail, a broken recommendation, or anything that reads as unfair, please tell us through our Contact page. Point us at the article and what looks wrong. We will look into it, and where a correction is needed we will make it.

Reader corrections are one of the most useful things we receive. They are not a nuisance.
