If your dishwasher isn't drying dishes, work through four things in this order: rinse aid (empty or disabled dispenser is the single most common cause), the cycle setting (air dry and eco options use little or no heat), loading (nested and stacked items trap water, and anything with an upturned rim holds a puddle), and water temperature (a cycle that ran cool won't leave dishes hot enough to evaporate).

But before any of that, there's a question almost nobody asks first: which drying system does your dishwasher actually use? If yours dries by condensation, which many modern machines do, then plastic items coming out wet is normal behavior for that design, not a fault. No repair fixes it, no setting fixes it, and knowing that will save you a service call.

First: which drying system do you have?

This is the step that reframes everything else, and it's missing from nearly every article on the subject. Dishwashers dry in fundamentally different ways, and they have different capabilities.

Exposed heating element. Look at the floor of the tub. If there's a visible metal coil looping across it, you have a heated dry machine. It heats the air in the tub at the end of the cycle to evaporate water. These dry the most aggressively, including plastics, and they're common on older and on many North American models.

Condensation drying. No visible element on the tub floor, and a stainless steel tub. These rely on the final rinse being hot enough that dishes come out hot, then the stainless walls, which cool faster than the dishes, pull the moisture out of the air and it runs down the sides. This is quieter, gentler, and more efficient. It's also physically incapable of drying plastic well, for a reason worth understanding.

Fan-assisted or desiccant-assisted. Some machines add a fan to move humid air out, or use a mineral in the base that absorbs moisture and releases heat. These sit between the two.

Why plastic is always the thing that comes out wet

Here's the physics, because it explains a complaint that gets misdiagnosed constantly.

Drying in a dishwasher is mostly about stored heat. Glass, ceramic, and stainless steel hold a lot of heat and stay hot after the rinse, so the water sitting on them evaporates. Plastic holds very little heat and cools almost immediately, so the water on it just sits there.

On a condensation-drying machine there's no external heat source to make up the difference. So the plastic containers on your top rack come out beaded with water while the plates below are bone dry. That's the design working as intended, not a fault developing.

Rinse aid: the cause that fixes most cases

Rinse aid is a surfactant. It reduces the surface tension of water so it forms a thin sheet rather than droplets. Sheets run off; droplets cling and then dry into spots. On a condensation-drying dishwasher it isn't an upsell, it's part of how the machine was designed to work, which is why those machines have a dispenser at all.

Two practical points. Combined detergent tablets that claim to include rinse aid do exist, but on condensation-drying machines many manufacturers still recommend filling the separate dispenser. And the dispenser has a dosage setting on many models, usually a dial inside the door, worth turning up if you're seeing spots as well as wetness.

If you're also seeing white film or cloudiness on glassware rather than just water, that's a different problem involving your water chemistry, and the signs of hard water in your house is the place to start.

The cycle you selected

Eco, air dry, and energy-saving cycles reduce or eliminate the heated drying stage. That is the point of them. If someone in the house changed the default, or the machine reverted after a power cut, you can get a sudden and total change in drying performance with nothing mechanically wrong.

Check for a heated dry, extra dry, or sanitize option and try one cycle with it on. Some machines also have a "hi temp wash" that raises the final rinse temperature, which improves drying indirectly by sending dishes into the dry stage hotter.

Longer cycles generally dry better than short ones, because the extended final rinse leaves more heat in the load.

Loading, which matters more than people expect

Water temperature

A dishwasher's drying performance depends on the load coming out of the final rinse hot. If the incoming water is cool, everything downstream is compromised.

Manufacturers specify a minimum incoming water temperature in the manual, and the figure varies by machine, so check yours rather than trusting a number from an article. The practical version: run the hot tap at your kitchen sink until the water is genuinely hot before starting the dishwasher. That clears the cooled water sitting in the pipe run so the machine draws hot water from the start rather than filling with lukewarm.

If your water heater is set low, or the dishwasher is a long pipe run from it, this is a bigger factor than it sounds.

When it is actually a fault

The clearest signal is a change. If the machine used to dry properly on the same cycle, with the same detergent and the same loading, and now doesn't, something has changed in the machine.

On a heated-dry model, a failed heating element is the usual suspect. A useful cross-check: the element also heats the wash water, so a failed element often shows up as dishes that are both wet and not properly clean, and as a load that's cool to the touch at the end of a cycle that should leave it warm.

Other genuine faults include a failed vent or vent fan, a stuck vent flap that never opens to release humid air, and a control board fault that skips the drying stage. None of these are diagnosed by an article.

Efficiency standards pushed the industry toward lower-heat drying, and that's a real trade-off: less energy, gentler on plastics and delicate items, slightly wetter results. It isn't a decline in quality so much as a different set of priorities. Knowing which trade-off your machine made is what stops you chasing a fault that isn't there.
