A refrigerator produces water as a normal part of working. Moisture from the air, and from your food, condenses on the cold surfaces inside, and that condensate has to go somewhere. Every fridge has a route out for it.

A puddle under the crisper drawers almost always means that route is blocked, not that the appliance is broken. It is one of the few refrigerator problems that is routinely fixable without a technician, and it is also one where the wrong fix causes damage.

Before anything: unplug the appliance if you are going to reach into it, and check your own manual for your model's drain arrangement. Designs differ and this page describes a general shape rather than yours specifically.

Where the water is supposed to go

On a frost-free refrigerator, the cooling surface periodically warms slightly to clear the frost that has built up on it. The resulting water runs down into a trough, through a small drain hole, down a tube, and into a shallow pan underneath the appliance near the compressor, where the heat of the compressor evaporates it.

Two consequences of that design are worth knowing.

Water inside the appliance is normal until it reaches the drain. Seeing condensation is not a fault.

The drain hole is small, and small holes block. Food particles, crumbs, mineral deposits and ice are the usual culprits, and the blockage is usually at the top of the tube rather than deep in it.

Work out where the water actually is

The location changes the answer, so look before you act.

Standing water in the base of the fridge compartment, under the drawers. The classic drain blockage. Most of this page.

Water under the drawers and ice at the back of the freezer. Same drain, blocked with ice rather than debris, and the pattern is worth reporting if it recurs.

Water on the floor in front of the fridge. Different problem. Look at the drain pan underneath, the water supply line if the unit has an ice maker or a dispenser, and the door seal.

Water inside the door shelves or on the ceiling of the compartment. Points at the door not sealing, warm humid air entering, and condensing on the first cold surface it meets.

Water only after the fridge has been very full, or after the door was left open. May simply be more condensation than the drain could clear in the time available. Clear it, dry it, and watch.

The checks, cheapest first

1. Dry it out and note the date

Take the drawers out, remove the standing water, dry the base, and write down the date. If it comes back in two days you have an active blockage. If it comes back in a month, something intermittent is happening, and knowing which is useful.

2. Check the door seal

Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull. If it slides out freely at any point along the seal, warm humid air is getting in continuously, which produces far more condensate than the drain was designed for.

Look for tears, hardened sections, and gaps at the corners. Check the door is not being held open by a shelf or a bottle.

3. Find the drain hole

On most units it is at the back of the fresh food compartment, low down, in the middle of a shallow channel. On some it is inside the freezer at the base of the rear panel.

Your manual is the document that tells you which. Some models place it where a homeowner cannot reach it, and that is a service call rather than a puzzle.

4. Clear it gently

Unplug the appliance first.

Warm water poured slowly into the channel is the first thing to try, and on a blockage of food debris it often clears it on its own.

What not to use: anything sharp or metal, anything rigid enough to puncture the tube, and no drain chemical of any kind. A punctured drain tube turns a free fix into a repair, and a chemical in a food compartment is not something this page will ever suggest.

If it will not clear with warm water and gentle pressure, stop. That is the point where it goes to a technician rather than the point where you push harder.

5. Look at the drain pan underneath

Pull the fridge out and look at the pan at the back near the compressor. It should be shallow, and in a working system what is in it evaporates.

A cracked or dislodged pan puts water on the floor rather than under the drawers, which is why the location matters.

A pan that never empties points at something else in the system and is an observation for a technician.

6. Check the clearances and the level

A fridge that is not level can pool water rather than draining it, and one crammed into too tight a recess runs warmer, which produces more condensate. Manufacturers publish clearance specifications in the manual.

Where this stops being yours

Anything behind a fixed panel. On some units the drain is only reachable by removing the rear freezer panel, and that is a technician's job on most models.

Anything involving the water supply line. A refrigerator with a plumbed ice maker or dispenser has a supply line and a shutoff valve, and a leak there is a plumbing question rather than a fridge question. Where a shutoff will not close, that is a plumber.

Anything sharp near the drain tube. There is no version of this where forcing a rigid tool into the drain is the right call.

Water near an electrical outlet, or a plug that is wet, hot or scorched. Stop, and get an electrician or a qualified appliance technician.

What the puddle is doing to the rest of the fridge

Standing water in a food compartment is a cleaning question as well as a repair one, and the two are worth doing together while the drawers are out.
