If your dishwasher isn't draining, don't reach into it yet. Cut power to the machine at the breaker first, then look at the water before you remove it. How much there is, and whether it's clear or dirty, points at different causes. A little clean water in the bottom of the tub is normal on some models. Dirty water that sits after every cycle means the drain path is blocked at the filter, the hose, or the disposal connection. And water that never moves is a different problem from water that drains slowly.

Most guides open by telling you to pull the filter. That's often where you end up, but it skips what decides whether you need a filter, a plumber, or an appliance technician. Four things you can see before touching anything sort that out, and they are the order this article follows.

First: cut the power, and confirm it is off

You are about to work on a mains-powered appliance that is holding water. Those two facts do not belong in the same room as your hands, so deal with the electricity first.

Go to your breaker panel and switch off the circuit feeding the dishwasher. Not the wall switch, not the control panel, not the cancel button. A switch interrupts a control; a breaker interrupts the supply. Then confirm it worked: open the door and press a button. If the panel is completely dead, the circuit is off.

Some dishwashers plug into an outlet in the sink cabinet, and unplugging one is fine. But if reaching the plug means leaning over standing water, use the breaker. If there is water on the floor, treat the area as live until the breaker is off.

Do not remove the junction box cover or the wiring shield at the base of the machine. That is a licensed electrician's work.

Read the standing water before you remove it

With the power off, look before you bail. This is the step that saves a service call.

A small amount of clean water is not always a fault. GE Appliances says on its support page for a dishwasher that is not draining, read 2026-08-24: "On models without an Ultra Fine filter at the bottom of the tub, 1 to 2 cups of clean water covering the bottom of the tub is normal." If yours is a shallow film of clear water and the dishes come out clean, check your manual before assuming anything failed.

Dirty water is a blocked drain path. Cloudy, food-flecked water sitting after every cycle means the water carrying that debris never left. That is a filter, hose, disposal or pump question.

Water that appears when the machine hasn't run points away from the dishwasher, toward the drain it shares with your sink.

Does it drain slowly, or not at all?

These look identical when you open the door, and they are not the same fault.

Slow draining is a partial restriction. Water leaves, just not all of it, or not before the cycle moves on. A loaded filter, a partly blocked hose, a fouled air gap, or a disposal that is backing up all produce this. Every one is somewhere you can reach.

No draining at all is either a fully blocked path or a pump that is not running. You can tell them apart without opening anything. Restore power, close the door, run the drain or cancel cycle, and stand well back with your hands nowhere near the machine. If the pump runs and the water does not move, the path is blocked. If you hear nothing, the pump or the control board is the suspect.

That second case is where this article stops. A drain pump is a sealed assembly wired into the supply, and replacing one is an appliance technician's job. Cut the power again before doing anything else.

Did this start right after something was installed?

If the machine used to drain and stopped, you have a blockage or a failure. If it has never drained since the day it went in, the most likely cause has a name.

When a dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, the disposal ships with a plastic knockout plug sealing that inlet, and it has to come out before the hose is connected. KitchenAid's product help page for a newly installed dishwasher that will not drain, read 2026-08-24, puts it plainly: "removing the knock-out plug is critical for draining the dishwasher." GE frames it as a check: "If a disposer was recently installed or replaced, make sure the drain plug inside the disposer was removed."

So the trigger is not only a new dishwasher. A new or replaced disposal on an old dishwasher does it too.

The drain hose, and why its route matters

Open the cabinet under your sink and look at where the corrugated hose from the dishwasher goes. Two things matter.

The first is obstruction. KitchenAid's guidance is to confirm the hose "isn't pinched, crushed, or sharply bent," and that it is securely clamped at the sink drain or disposal inlet. A hose kinked when the machine was pushed back into place is a common cause.

The second is height. KitchenAid states the drain hose "must be installed with a proper high loop or connected to an air gap, as required by local codes." A high loop means the hose rises near the underside of the counter before descending to the connection. Without that rise, or an air gap doing the same job, nothing stops water running back into the tub.

Which of the two your area requires varies by local code, so check yours rather than trusting a national rule. Cutting into or re-plumbing the household drain line is a licensed plumber's work.

Getting the water out, and checking the filter

Power off at the breaker again before your hands go near the tub.

Bail the water with a cup or jug, then finish with towels. Do not scoop with your hands, and do not feel around the bottom of the tub for the blockage. Whirlpool's product help page, read 2026-08-24, is explicit about what collects down there: "If the water filter area (bottom of the dishwasher) gets larger food particles or foreign objects (toothpicks, broken glass, olive pits, etc.) around it, they should be carefully removed by hand and discarded before removing the filters."

Broken glass is on that list for a reason. Wear cut-resistant gloves and lift debris out with a cup, tongs or a folded towel rather than fingertips. If you find glass, rinse the filter somewhere other than your kitchen sink.

The disposal, the air gap and the drain you share

Your dishwasher does not have its own drain, so a problem downstream shows up inside the machine.

GE's checklist covers the two things you can reach. If a disposal is fitted: "Run the disposer to clear the blockage. Once the garbage disposer is unclogged, start a drain cycle on the dishwasher to remove the water." If you have an air gap, the small chrome cylinder on the sink deck: "remove the cap on the air gap and clean out any build-up of debris."

The fastest way to tell whether the machine is involved is to fill the sink and let it out. If the sink drains slowly on its own, the dishwasher is a bystander. That is a kitchen drain problem, and if the disposal is sluggish or smelling too, a disposal that has started to smell covers the same cabinet from the other direction.

Clearing the household drain line beyond your appliance connection is a licensed plumber's work.

Never pour drain cleaner into a dishwasher

GE Appliances is unambiguous on its own support page, read 2026-08-24: "Chemical drain cleaners such as Drain-O or Liquid Plumber should never be used in a dishwasher for any reason." GE's stated reason is that these products are highly caustic and can damage the rubber components inside. The seals, hoses and pump are what you would be dissolving while trying to save them.

There is a second reason. A dishwasher tub is never free of detergent residue, and a caustic opener is not something to combine with an unknown chemistry in a sealed space you then put plates into. No product, no quantity and no method appears here, deliberately.

The same rule covers anything you clean with nearby: never mix cleaners. Bleach with ammonia, and bleach with vinegar, both produce toxic gas.

If something has already gone in, do not run the machine and do not put your hands in it. Call the manufacturer's support line or an appliance technician and tell them what is in there.

Each boundary is named at the point you reach it rather than buried in a closing note.

Get through the checks above and still find water sitting there, and what is left belongs to one of those four.
