The bottle sits by the dishwasher tablets, it costs money every few months, and nothing obviously breaks when you skip it. So the question is fair: is rinse aid a genuine part of how the machine works, or is it the dishwasher aisle's version of an upsell?

The honest answer is that it depends on which dishwasher you own, and most people have never been told there are two kinds. On one kind, rinse aid is optional and you may not miss it. On the other, it is part of how the manufacturer designed the drying to happen, and leaving the dispenser empty means the machine cannot do the job it was built to do.

What rinse aid actually is

Rinse aid is not detergent and it does not clean anything. It is a surfactant: a substance that lowers the surface tension of water.

Water on a plate wants to pull itself into beads. Beads are the problem. A bead sits on the surface, dries in place, and leaves behind whatever minerals and detergent residue were dissolved in it, which is the spot you can see. Lower the surface tension and the water stops beading and starts sheeting: it runs off the item as a thin film instead of sitting on it as droplets.

Two things follow from that. Less water is left on the dish at the end of the cycle, so there is less to dry. And the water that does remain is spread thin rather than pooled, so it evaporates faster and leaves less behind when it does.

That is the whole mechanism. It is worth knowing, because it also tells you what rinse aid cannot do: it does not soften water, it does not remove limescale that is already there, it does not clean, and it will not fix a machine that is not rinsing properly for some other reason.

The two kinds of dishwasher, and why it matters

This is the part that answers the question.

Heated-dry machines have an exposed heating element in the base of the tub. At the end of the cycle it heats the air and drives the water off the dishes. These machines can dry reasonably well with an empty rinse aid dispenser, because they are applying heat to the problem.

Condensation-drying machines have no exposed element in the tub. They rely on the dishes being hot from the final rinse, and on the stainless steel walls of the tub being cooler than the dishes, so water evaporates from the dishes and condenses on the walls instead. It is a quieter, more energy-efficient and gentler-on-plastics design, and it is common on European-style machines.

On a condensation-drying dishwasher, rinse aid is not an accessory. The design assumes water will sheet off the dishes rather than sit on them, because the machine has no heat to spare for boiling off droplets. Run one with an empty dispenser and it will leave dishes wetter than the owner expects, and the owner will conclude the machine is faulty when it is doing exactly what an unaided condensation dryer does.

How to tell which one you have: look at the floor of the tub with the racks out. A visible coiled or covered element across the bottom means heated dry. A flat floor with no element means condensation drying. If you are not sure, your model's manual will say, and it will also tell you what the manufacturer expects of the rinse aid dispenser.

Two things that catch people out

Combined tablets do not always replace the dispenser. Detergent products that advertise a built-in rinse aid function exist and they do work to a degree. But on condensation-drying machines many manufacturers still direct owners to fill the separate dispenser as well, because the combined product is compromising between two jobs. If you use an all-in-one tablet on a condensation dryer and the dishes are still coming out wet, filling the dispenser is the first thing to try, not the last.

The dispenser usually has a dosage setting. Most machines have a small dial or a menu setting that controls how much rinse aid is released per cycle. If you are seeing spots, turning it up is a legitimate step. If you are seeing a cloudy film or streaks that were not there before, or the dishes feel slightly slippery, you are dosing too high and should turn it down. Both directions are adjustments the manufacturer designed in.

Do not put vinegar in the rinse aid dispenser

This suggestion circulates constantly and it is worth addressing directly, because it looks sensible. Vinegar is acidic, acid dissolves limescale, and the dispenser is right there.

Several dishwasher manufacturers specifically warn against it, on the basis that the dispenser and its seals are not designed to hold an acid for weeks at a time and that repeated exposure can degrade rubber components inside the machine. The gaskets and seals are the part at risk, and they are not a cheap thing to have replaced.

We are not going to tell you what your particular machine's maker says, because they do not all say the same thing. Your manual governs. Look up your model, find what it says about the rinse aid dispenser and about cleaning agents, and follow that. If the manual is long gone, the manufacturer's support site will usually have a PDF of it against your model number.

There is a separate and more useful point buried in this: vinegar used as a periodic cleaning run, in the tub rather than in the dispenser, is a different question with a different answer, and it is still one your manual should decide. Some manufacturers permit it, some direct you to a proprietary machine cleaner instead.

If rinse aid does not fix it, rinse aid was not the problem

Filling the dispenser is a cheap first move, and it genuinely resolves a lot of complaints. When it does not, the cause is usually somewhere else, and there is a sensible order to work through.

The filter is the one worth checking first, because it is free, it takes five minutes, and a clogged filter recirculates dirty water over everything in the machine. No amount of rinse aid improves a rinse that is being done with water full of food debris. After that: check that the cycle you are running actually includes a drying phase, since eco and air-dry settings often skip the heat deliberately. Check the loading, because nested items and anything with an upturned rim will hold a puddle whatever the rinse aid does. And if your machine takes dishwasher salt, check that reservoir separately, since salt regenerates the machine's water softener and is a different job from rinse aid entirely.

One boundary worth stating plainly. A dishwasher is a mains-powered appliance plumbed into a water supply. Filling a dispenser, cleaning a filter and changing a setting are owner jobs. Anything involving the machine's internal wiring, its heating circuit or its control board is a licensed appliance technician's work, and a persistent drying failure on a heated-dry machine after everything above has been checked is a service call rather than a weekend project.

Is rinse aid safe on dishes? It is formulated to be used on dishware and is rinsed away during the cycle. If you are seeing residue or dishes feel slippery, the dosage setting is too high and should be turned down.

Can I use rinse aid if my dishwasher does not have a dispenser? Some machines have no dispenser at all, and those are typically designed not to need one. Products intended to be added directly to the tub exist; whether they are appropriate for your machine is a question for your manual, not for a general article.

How often do I need to refill it? It varies with the dosage setting and how often you run the machine. Most dispensers have a small indicator window or a light that tells you when it is low, which is a more reliable guide than a schedule.

Does rinse aid help with cloudy glasses? It helps with one of the two causes and does nothing for the other. Deposits left by hard water wipe off and rinse aid reduces them. Etching, which is permanent damage to the glass surface itself, will not respond to anything, and adding more detergent in an attempt to shift it makes etching worse rather than better. Establish which one you have before you spend money on either.
